Qualifications:

 

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Two (2) or more years of increasingly responsible equivalent or related experience
  • Ability to type at least 60 words per minute
  • Certification for REJIS computer terminals (preferred)

 

·         Mental:   Thinks quickly and rationally.  Remains calm in difficult or stressful situations.  Can effectively organize and prioritize work.  Can concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.  Communicates clearly both verbally and in writing.  Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.

 

  • Physical:  Able to sit at desk for over eight hours a day.  Able to work at a computer for several hours a day.  Must be able to type at least 60 words per minute.  Must work rotating shifts.  Must work overtime in absence of other dispatchers. 

 

Job Description

 

·         Dispatches calls for service in a timely manner, based on existing priorities, established policies and procedures, and supervisory direction.  Provides and/or relays all necessary obtained information to officer(s) to ensure efficient/effective police response.  Information is dispatched in an organized, efficient manner.  Radio transmissions are knowingly clear, understood and acknowledged.  Tone of voice on radio reflects respect, and a professional, positive demeanor.  Adheres to FCC and department rules and procedures.

 

·         Handles multiple calls and/or incidents simultaneously, demonstrated through overall ability and demeanor.  Prioritizes phone calls and resulting actions taken based on the nature of the incident(s)/issue(s) and the totality of the overall dispatching function. Makes appropriate/high quality decisions regarding referral or notification to supervisors or other internal/external resources. Adapts to changes in priorities.

 

·         Displays and demonstrates concern for officer safety, in accordance with contemporary dispatch and police safety practices and department policies. 

 

·         Answers 911 & administrative business phone lines, transfers telephone calls on an emergency/non-emergency basis. Makes various notifications and maintains phone records in order to ensure effective police services for the City of Creve Coeur. Uses time effectively to accomplish department tasks.

 

·         Shows professionalism when speaking on the telephone.  Displays a sense of caring through tone of voice and demonstrates initiative intended to effectively and efficiently assist the caller.  Uses telephone etiquette including a greeting that exemplifies feeling of customer service; verification that caller can “hold” when necessary; and notification to caller anytime the department is unable to respond immediately to a call for service.

 

 

 

 

  • Uses time effectively to accomplish department/division tasks, such as, but not limited to, computer entry, reviewing work, updating policies. 

 

·         Makes computer entries and inquiries into the REJIS computer system in order to assist officers with investigations and to ensure accurate criminal history record keeping. Completes all other assigned computer entry duties.

 
·         Enters information in CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) system.  All codes, fields and sections contain critical information to accurately document the officer/department activity.  Additional pertinent information is entered to identify dispositions and extent of department’s quality of service.  Ensures entries are professional, appropriate and made in a timely manner and errant entries are corrected.
