Yard WasteYard Waste Collection by Trash Hauler
Bags & Tags Yard waste can either be placed in Allied Waste bags or unlined trash cans with a yard waste sticker. Effective July 1, 2007, bags are available at the Government Center for $2.85; tags are available at the Government Center and both Dierbergs for $2.35. Bundles of twigs or branches tied at both ends and Christmas trees must also have a yard waste sticker to be collected. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected. Toters Loose leaves are vacuumed by the Public Works Department in the fall and spring for single-family residences. The leaf vacuuming program will start in late October 2008 Service schedules, which are also determined by ward, are posted in the monthly Newsletter. The pick-up hose on the vacuum is only 9 ft long. Keeping this in mind, place your leaves away from mailboxes and landscape areas. Put them in a row along the curb line in front of your house within reach of the hose. Please make sure brush and trash is not mixed in with your leaves as these items can damage the equipment. Leaf piles containing this type of debris can not be picked up. Loose leaves must be placed by the curb line, but not in the street, before Monday at 7 a.m. and will be picked up any day during the week, weather permitting. No bags, no grass, no hedge clippings, and no brush in leaves are accepted. Call 872-2533 for more information. Click here to find out how to bag leaves for pick-up by Allied Waste on your trash day. Limb chipping service has begun for the 2008 chipping
season. Place your limbs at the curb and city crews will chip brush
through out the city on a two week schedule.
The 3 ft area shown on the limb chipper represents the safety zone. Branches can get snagged on a worker’s glove, and when the branch gets pulled into the feed wheels, the employee will come with it. The 3 ft gives them a few seconds to get unsnagged. Limb chipping services generally run from mid-March thru October with a special one-time collection in the winter. This service allows residents to dispose of branches that have fallen in their yard or minor tree trimming that they have done to their trees. This program is not designed to dispose of land clearing debris or entire tree removal. There are several items that the crews will not pick-up, including bushes, root wads, any material with thorns, branches less than 3 feet long, less than 1/2 inch in diameter, or larger than 3 inches in diameter. Short or small material forces the workers to place their hands to close to the blades on the machine, and they could be pulled in. The longer the branch, the easier it is for the crews to dispose of. Also, root wads will damage the equipment and could throw rocks back at city employees. One root wad will destroy the blades on the chipper, which are costly. Mulch is not available this season; however, wood chips will be available during limb chipping season. Call 872-2533 for more information. Live Christmas trees will be picked up by Allied Waste at the curb on trash day if the tree has a yard waste sticker attached to it. Do not put trees in a plastic bag.
