WHAT:           The nation’s largest recycling drive will be held in the parking lot of a synagogue in suburban St. Louis, in celebration of America Recycles Day. The third annual electronics recycling drive held by Congregation B’nai Amoona, the city of Creve Coeur, MO, and Web Innovations Technology Services (WITS), the drive is expected to collect 12 tractor-trailers full of electronics. Each holds approximately 10 tons. With a zero percent landfill policy, all materials will be disposed of in an ecologically correct manner.

Anything considered electronics is accepted ranging from computers, monitors, TVs, VCRs, lawn mowers and tillers to blenders, toasters, phones and alarm clocks. All items are accepted free except monitors,  laptops and major appliances ($5) and TVs ($10) because they contain hazardous materials requiring special handling. Last year, in addition to the electronics, 1,000 lbs. of paper instruction manuals were recycled.

Of the computers collected last year, 55% were broken down for recycling; 45% were refurbished by WITS and given free to homebound children, low-income families, community centers and school districts in several states.
