CREVE COEUR - With the November election approaching, campaign signs are again visible. Temporary election signs are regulated by the city's zoning ordinance in order to ensure that pedestrian and vehicular safety are not hindered due to their improper placement. Regulations for temporary election signs include the following:

Within 45 days prior to and 10 days after any election held within Creve Coeur, temporary election signs are permitted with the property owner's permission on any residentially zoned lot. One or more single- or double-faced sign is permitted on each lot, and no sign face shall exceed 12 sq ft.

Not more than one political sign per individual candidate and/or proposition shall be permitted per lot or site area. The regulations for nonresidentially-zoned lots or parcels of land in the city are the same as those outlined above, except that no single sign face shall exceed 24 sq ft.

In addition, please keep this information in mind when placing election signs in accordance with the city's sign ordinance:

Political signs are prohibited within the public right-of-way (ROW) and may not be attached to utility poles.

In residential neighborhoods, private property usually begins about 2' from the inside edge of an existing sidewalk or at least 10' from the edge of the street where no sidewalk exists.

A variety of dimensions may be used to reach the 12' (residential) and 24' (commercial) maximum sign area (e.g. 3x4, 2x6, 4x6).

Corner lots (lots having frontage on two streets) are still limited to one political sign per candidate and/or proposition with a sign face area no greater than the maximum allowed for that area.

When installing a temporary election sign, take care not to block the access or visibility of pedestrian or vehicular traffic.

If you have any questions about temporary election signs, please contact the Planning Department at 872-2500.
